The National Toll Administration (NTA) is launching weigh-in-motion checks for trucks over 3.5 tons
As of 15 October, the National Toll Administration introduces a new weigh-in-motion system for vehicles over 3.5 tons. Using sensors embedded in the road surface, heavy goods vehicles will be weighed automatically in real time, without stopping.
When overloading is detected, the system generates evidentiary records including a photo, vehicle weight, and data on the location and time of the violation. Offenders will receive a notification and may pay a compensatory fee of BGN 1,200 to avoid a fine. If the fee is not paid within the prescribed period, an electronic penalty notice is issued, with fines reaching BGN 3,000 for a first offense and BGN 4,000 for a repeat offense.
The measure aims to curb overloading, reduce road wear, and improve traffic safety.
Currently, 10 locations have been certified, with the number expected to reach 100 by the end of next year.
