    New Vignettes, Higher Toll Rates, and CO₂ Criteria in the EU

    From 2026, the updated Eurovignette Directive begins its actual implementation, encouraging:

    • a shift from time-based vignettes to distance-based charging;
    • the introduction of a CO₂ component in toll charges for heavy goods vehicles;
    • price differentiation based on environmental class, number of axles, and noise levels.

    As a result, many countries are changing not only prices but also the entire tolling model.

    Key Country-Specific Changes in 2026

    🇧🇬 Bulgaria

    • One-day electronic vignette for passenger cars (up to 3.5 t) from 3 February 2026 – price: €4.09. Available via TollShop.
    • All vignettes and toll charges will be announced in euros following the country’s adoption of the eurozone on 1 January 2026.
    • Introduction of a CO₂ component in toll charges for heavy goods vehicles – higher fees for older, more polluting trucks. For more information, inquire here.

    🇦🇹 Austria

    • From 1 January 2026 – new truck toll rates based on number of axles, noise, and CO₂ emissions.
    • Full digitization of vignettes – physical stickers will be gradually phased out.
    • Moderate increase in passenger car vignette prices (around 3%). Available via TollShop.

    🇷🇴 Romania

    • Sharp increase in passenger car vignette (Rovinieta) prices – the annual vignette rises from €28 to €50. Available via TollShop.
    • From 1 July 2026 – abolition of vignettes for trucks over 3.5 t and introduction of TollRo, a distance-based toll system. Charges depend on distance traveled and CO₂ emissions and require an onboard unit or mobile app. For more information, inquire here.
    • Increase in bridge tolls over the Danube.

    🇳🇱 Netherlands

    • From 1 July 2026 – end of the Eurovignette.
    • Introduction of a kilometer-based toll system for trucks over 3.5 t.
    • Expected average rate of approximately €0.195/km, depending on weight and CO₂ class.

    🇵🇱 Poland

    • Expansion of the toll road network for heavy goods vehicles.

    • Different rates depending on the region (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels) and the vehicle’s CO₂ class.

    🇨🇿 Czech Republic

    • From 1 January 2026 – higher toll rates and expansion of the tolled road network.
    • Stronger environmental differentiation of toll charges.

    🇩🇰 Denmark

    • Trucks with low or zero emissions gain real financial advantages.
    • Route and cost planning becomes increasingly important for transport companies.
    • Passenger cars gain more flexible products (such as one-day vignettes), but also face higher prices in some countries.
